AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program
Free income tax counseling, preparation, and electronic filing are available at Aztec Senior Center. This is for all seniors 50 and up. Our Tax-Aide volunteers are trained, tested, and Certified through the AARP Foundation and the IRS.

Hours are Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. February 2 through April 13. Make your appointment at the Center, or by calling 505-334-2881.

You may also come without an appointment, and you will be helped with your income taxes if enough time is available between or after appointments.

Important Documents Needed for Your Appointment:
bullet Social Security card and photo I.D., self and spouse
bullet Social Security cards for all dependents
bullet Prior year - 2015 - income tax returns and records
bullet If you paid estimated tax for 2016, bring the amounts and dates paid


All 2016 INCOME information:
bullet SSA-1099 from Social Security
bullet W-2 forms from all employers
bullet 1099 forms from the bank, credit union, broker, retirement plan, etc.
bullet SSI letters or 1099 forms, if applicable
bullet Unemployment income statements, same
bullet All other income - self-employment, gambling, child care, etc.


In addition to the documents listed above, you must bring any of the following documents that are applicable to your situation:
bullet For sales of securities or other assets - bring records of original cost and purchase date, if not on the 1099-B or investment company forms.
bullet 2016 Property Tax bills and payment information.
bullet If you can itemize deductions (health care, taxes, contributions, etc.) bring complete details of amounts paid and names of payees. Even if you do not itemize, health care expenses may reduce your New Mexico tax.
bullet Your bank account number, for Direct Deposit of refunds (blank check is easiest).
bullet Anything else you think might be needed for this work!


Health Insurance Reporting - Affordable Care Act
bullet If you have Medicare Part A you are covered. If you purchased insurance through a Health Insurance Exchange, we must have the Form 1095-A you received.
bullet Also bring "Exemptions" received from IRS or the Exchange. If you had other coverage, or if you have dependents, we need to know about monthly health insurance coverage for each person in the household.


IRS Taxpayer Assistance
IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TAC) are your source for personal tax help when you believe you tax issue cannot be handled online or by phone and you want face-to-face tax assistance. There are TAC sites located in the larger cities of New Mexico. Centers are closed for all Federal holidays.

Tax Help new Mexico
Tax Help New Mexico is a free service for people whose household income is $54,000 or less or those who are 65 years or older. Tax Help volunteers are certified by the IRS and are trained to help taxpayers identify tax credits for which they're entitled to. Tax Help is operated in partnership between CNM and the United Way of Central New Mexico. The local Tax Help New Mexico is provided at San Juan College.

What to Bring
In order to have your taxes prepared at a Tax Help New Mexico location, you must have the following documents:
bullet Original Social Security cards or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) for yourself, your spouse and your dependents or anyone else on your return.
bullet Tax payer(s) must have a photo ID (driver license, state issued ID, passport, military ID, tribal ID).
bullet Birth dates for all persons listed on the return.
bullet Married filing joint: both spouses must be present with proper documentation to complete tax return.


In addition to the documents listed above, you must bring any of the following documents that are applicable to your situation:
bullet Form 1095-A (From Marketplace invoice)
bullet All W-2 Forms
bullet All W-2G Forms (Gambling)
bullet All 1099 Forms (Miscellaneous, Interest, Dividends, etc.)
bullet All 1098 Forms (Mortgage and Tuition Statements)
bullet All K-1 Forms
bullet Prior year tax return
bullet Statement from your daycare provider with the amount paid, address and tax number if claiming child and dependent care expenses. If you may be eligible for the state daycare credit, you will need to bring a NM PIT CG from your daycare provider.
bullet List and total of all itemized deductible expenses such as medical expenses, charitable deductions, real estate taxes, etc.
bullet List and total of all business expenses, including mileage records, if you are self-employed. Also bring amounts paid for gross receipts taxes.
bullet SSA-1099 Social Security benefits statement.
bullet If you are a first time home buyer that finalized your closing by 9/2010, bring proof of purchase.
bullet If you are required to repay the first time homebuyer credit, a record of the amount of the credit you received.
bullet If you purchased a home in the last year, bring your closing documents.
bullet Records of all other income received.
bullet If you would like your refund deposited directly into a bank account, bring your bank's routing number and your account number.
bullet If you sold stock we would need purchase date, how much was it purchased for, date sold, how much it was sold for, records of any fees paid.
bullet If you had college educational expenses, bring book and tuition costs.
bullet All other tax-related documents.

Tax Help New Mexico will again be on the San Juan College campus to assist the elderly and people with low incomes prepare their tax returns.

Tax preparers will be available from 3 to 9 p.m., Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays, now through March 17, in room 7106, Information Technology Center, on the Farmington campus.

You must have the following documents:
bullet Current photo ID
bullet Social Security cards for yourself, your spouse and your dependents.
bullet W-2 wage and tax statements from your employer.
bullet 1099 forms.
bullet Interest statements.
bullet Dividend statements.
bullet A bank document with routing and account number for direct deposit.
bullet A statement from your care provider with the amount paid, address and tax number if claiming child and dependent care expenses.
bullet A list of all itemized deductible expenses.
bullet If necessary, Form W-2G for certain gambling winnings; and records of all other income received.
bullet Also bring a copy of your 2015 tax return.

Students and volunteers who have gone through training and been certified through the IRS will help people prepare their 2016 taxes and file them electronically. The services are free of charge.
